Computing, How To By Jul 22, 2024

Your hard drive is the digital backbone of your computer, as it stores all your important files, applications, and data. Unfortunately, hard drives can be corrupted over time, which leads to data loss and system instability. However, before you panic and assume the worst, there’s a powerful built-in tool in Windows that can help you diagnose and repair common hard drive issues—and that’s CHKDSK (Check Disk).

CHKDSK is a command-line utility in Windows designed to check and repair file system and disk errors. It can address a variety of issues, including bad sectors, file system corruption, and directory problems.

Here’s how to repair a corrupted hard drive using the Windows CHKDSK Tool in real time.

Step 1: Open a Command Prompt

In order to use CHKDSK, you’ll need to open a Command Prompt with administrator privileges. Here’s how to do it:

  • Press Win + S on your keyboard and type “CMD.”
  • Right-click “Command Prompt terminal” and select “Run as administrator.”

Step 2: Choose the CHKDSK  Command

Once the Command Prompt is open, you need to choose the appropriate CHKDSK  command depending on your needs. Here are some common options:

  • To scan and automatically fix file system errors, use the following command:

CHKDSK  /f E:

Replace “E:” with the drive letter you are going to scan.

  • If you also want to locate and recover bad sectors on the drive, use this command:

CHKDSK  /r E:

  • To scan the drive and display a report without making any changes, use this command:

CHKDSK  /scan E:

Step 3: Schedule the CHKDSK Scan

After running one of the CHKDSK commands, you may be prompted to schedule the scan for the next system restart if you are trying to scan the system drive (usually E:).

You need to type “Y” and press Enter to confirm and then simply restart your computer. CHKDSK will run before Windows fully loads.

Step 4: Review the Results

Once the CHKDSK scan is complete, your Windows will provide you with a summary of the results. If any issues are found and fixed, CHKDSK will report on them. If no issues were found, it will let you know that as well.

Step 5: Check for Data Recovery

In some cases, CHKDSK  may not be able to recover all your data. If your drive contains valuable files, you should consider using data recovery software to attempt to retrieve any lost data. Just be sure to do this before using the drive to prevent overwriting the lost files.
